You want to build one specific character rather than browse a library, you care about proactive messaging (a character that texts you first, aware of the time gap), and you're willing to pay for memory that's genuinely architectural rather than a bigger context window. The tradeoff is setup time (~45 minutes) and a product that changes on a 4–8 week cadence.
You want to start immediately with zero setup, browse a huge existing library instead of writing one from scratch, and the free tier being genuinely usable (not a demo) matters more to you than reply length or context depth. The tradeoff is that even the cheap $5 tier doesn't fix the things people complain about most — you need the $14.95 tier for the product to actually change.

Kindroid, clearly — it's the most developed proactive-messaging system we found in the whole category: context-aware texts, voice notes, selfies or calls, aware of how long you've been gone, with calendar integration for real events. We didn't find proactive outreach documented as a SpicyChat feature in our review of it.
Kindroid ships app builds alongside the web version (the web price is intentionally lower — $13.99 vs $15.99 — to route around store fees). SpicyChat has no app store listing at all; it runs in-browser, with a documented PWA home-screen install as the closest thing to an app. Neither Apple nor Google host explicit apps, which is standard across this category.
